Karen

My first car was a candy apple red beetle...loved that car!

Eunice

My first car was a 1955 red and white Chevrolet with a stick shift. I was 15. I jerked all the way to school for the first week.

Toby

And who doesn't love something for free when it's a beautiful new sock pattern?

My first car was a purple Honda Civic coupe. Loved that car even though it had no A/C. It was a touchy stick shift too - I had to learn to drive stick in a couple of days before I had to drive it across the state.

Beth

My first car was a Suzuki Samurai hardtop - red and white. It was a stick and I had to learn to drive the darn thing out on the highway with my stepmother.

KTE

I'm in! I learned to drive in a rust-coloured Pontiac Grand LeMans. I am NOT a tall person - so I looked like an awfully little kid driving such a big car...
Road trip? Rhinebeck 2008 was pretty memorable :) - good company, good entertainment, knitting in the car and catching up on a LOT of sleep (sorry DearKnits)

Adrienne

My first car was a 1985 Volvo 740 GLE. It had 280k miles on it before the fuel system failed. Gods, how I miss that car! Seat warmers, sun roof, leather. Granted, if I sat up straight, my head kinda stuck out the sun roof, but it was a good air conditioning alternative.

CatieP

My first car was a red 1992 four-door Ford Tempo that I "inherited"/gifted from my parents. I called her Plain Jane - she wasn't flashy but she was awesome (and had air conditioning). Jane took me to high school, university, on trips... We had to trade her in when we moved to Alberta (three years ago this September) from BC because she didn't pass provincial inspections.

My favorite road trip in Jane was with Cory (then my boyfriend, now my husband). We went from Kelowna, through Canmore and Calgary, up to Edmonton then down to Rossland via Cranbrook then back to Kelowna. On that trip I met some of my husband's childhood best friends and I think that was my first time at the Calgary Stampede (though even if it wasn't on that trip, Jane did take us to the Stampede).

You're working so hard on designing! We will all benefit from your great projects.
My first car was a baby blue '71 VW Beetle. My brother and I shared the car. He would drive me to work every morning and continue to his job. Good plan right? Wrong. The VW had a hole in the floorboard (of course, it was on my side.) so in order to shield myself on rainy days, I had to cover the hole/myself with a large black trash bag. Really bad and not very safe!
During our drives, I had the bad habit of singing at the top of my lungs to my favorite tunes on the radio. He nicknamed me "Mario Speedwagon". I drove fast like Mario Andretti and preferred REO Speedwagon. I lost my brother a few years ago, but every time I hear REO, I belt one out for John.

My first car was a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle named "Herman My Volkswagen". Herman had a hard roll-back sunroof and was a unique color of turquoise. The salesman kept me driving around the parking lot for an hour stopping & starting so I wouldn't cause an accident by learning to drive on the road :).

I was 18 and needed the car to get to work at the Experimental Flight Test Hangar at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford CT. That's important because when the on-off switch on the radio went, the guys in the Radio & Electric Lab fixed me up with a toggle on-off switch taped to the steering wheel. The foreman gave me instructions that if I had a guy in the car and he was bothering me, just tell him the switch was to toggle him right out the sunroof!

Thanks for bringing back the memories of all the adventures Herman and I had.

Julie

My first car was a 1964 Mini. I dozed off after an evening shift and came to a stop against a tree. No injuries aside from a bruised knee but the car was a write-off. Taught me a good lesson about pulling over before you get the nods!

Darci

I am join the VW club...my first car was a 64 bug which my boyfriend now husband lovingly rebuilt. It was a perfect college car...I could squeeze into all of the small spots.

MicheleLB

First car: a Toyota Tercel, with DH. It was a long time ago! Zoom Zoom is a good looking sock!

Joanna

My first car was a 1987 Nissan Pulsar. It had 200k plus miles on it, the paint was faded, the gas tank leaked, the ac didn't work, the t-top on the passenger side leaked, only 1 of the retractable headlights actually retracted, and the radio was wired wrong so you had to unhook it when you turned the car off or else the battery would run down. It lasted through my high school years but my little brother managed to kill it. I loved that car...lol

Melody

My first car was a very practical silver corolla. It had no bells or whistles, but got better mileage than most current models, even supposedly high efficiency models.

irishgirlieknits

Such a great idea Sam! Plus I love your patterns!!

stariel

My first (and so far only) car was a 1981 Pontiac Phoenix hatchback. It was older than me, more rust than blue, and had a bench seat partially held together with duct tape. Also the ski rack on the roof gave it a distinctive whistle as you drove down the street.

It lasted about 2 weeks before problems with the fuel line made it so expensive to fix that it wouldn't have been worth it. Since then I've learned to love public transportation. :)

Carolenj

So much fun to read about everyone's cars! Looks like there were a lot of 'Bugs. My first car was a 1964 Chevy Corvair - the one Ralph Nader said was "Unsafe at any speed" It had a gasoline powered heater and really smelled when the heater was on. It also had a short in the ignition system and you had to blow the horn while you started the car! Of course this made it impossible to sneak out of the driveway, but otherwise, it was a great car for a teenager.

ikkinlala

My favourite road trip was with my dad, going to Dawson Creek to visit some friends.

marisol

My first car was a little copper dodge plymouth? 4 door hatchback. I learned to drive in that car and it served me well! I bought it brand new off the lot and I sure had a good time as a young 20 something driving around town with friends and family:)

Kerry P.

My first car was a 1976 green Toyota Corona and I loved it! May fave roadtrip is the winding road up to Whistler, which is so fun to drive.

woohoogirl

My first car was a brown Honda Civic hatchback. I bought it from my college RA. When I got home with it my father's only comment was... "You paid HOW MUCH for this???" Six months later the shocks were coming through on the inside of the car and the starter had a good spot left in it.

irishgirlieknits

Don't count my entries (two, I know!) because I already have the fabulous pattern. But in doing my blog link, I reread the post. My first car was a 1973 SuperBeetle!! How cool were we! Mine was banana slug yellow! We called it the slug bug. Oh how I loved it. But, you know....I had it for quite awhile and when I graduated from graduate school, I realized I needed a "real car."

Karin

My first car was a '69 Nova. Metallic light green with rust and a dashboard that was peeling. Any time you opened a window you were "confetti'd".

Sarah-Dianne

My first car is still my car! I have a Ford Escape. It has a lovely NSK bumper sticker on it!

jen

let's see it was a 1978 Chevy Malibu Station Wagon as big as a house. It was dark red and her name was Nellie Belle.
She was my mom's and was gifted to me for 1$ for the last year of high school and i lived at college without a car for a year then brought Nellie Belle down after my sophmore year of college. I was popular to help people move for obvious reasons with that car.
